Slambuy.com – Overcoming Disabilities and Helping Others Proves to be a Good Deal
Canadian-based Slambuy.com, a daily deals site with a difference was started by two brothers, Mario and Luca Lavorato along with childhood friends David Gimes and Will Campbell. Slambuy, members benefit from discounts that range from 50 to 92 percent but the site and its founders go beyond just being a daily deals site.
The Lavorato brothers have been battling cystic fibrosis from a very young age. Their parents worked hard to ensure that they led normal lives in spite of their illness. However, the brothers found that working full time for others did not allow them the time needed to maintain their health. This prompted them to start Slambuy, a daily deals site offering everything from spa treatments to restaurant discounts.
Mario and Luca started Slambuy in the basement of their parents’ home. When the brothers realized how successful the industry could be, they wanted to channel some of it to help others. A portion of Slambuy profits go to charities such as CF Canada that works to alleviate the condition of those suffering from cystic fibrosis. In December, Slambuy managed to raise $500 for CF Canada, and plans to raise more funds in future. The brothers choose CF Canada for their first recipient because the organization has been helping them in many ways – providing support and lobbying for medical help.
Another recipient of funds is set to be Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Again this is because of the personal experience of Will Campbell who lost a brother to a drunk driving accident.
Slambuy plans to get others involved, especially the corporate world to increase the amount donated to charities. They want to tie up with businesses to match the amount they raise in a specific period.
Mario and Luca have managed to turn a disadvantage such as cystic fibrosis into something worthwhile by becoming entrepreneurs and deciding to help others in need of financial and social support. Their illness did not lead them to give up but instead spurred them to come up with a viable way of generating an income and contributing to society.
