In an effort to expand its global mobile payment market, China Mobile recently announced its decision to partner with American Express. As the largest mobile carrier in China, China Mobile aims to reach over $164 billion in sales within the next three to five years.
With over 760 million subscribers, China Mobile created Habeo, its NFC-based mobile payment service. Previously referred to as the Phone Wallet, the service mainly pertains to those clients who engage in overseas shopping. As part of its new partnership with American Express, the company plans to team up with domestic banks to manage and ensure the satisfactory transactions between American Express electronic checks and Hebao accounts.
Due to the exponential increase of mobile payment services becoming available, it is expected that the transaction amount paid through these mobile services will grow at a rate of 50% a year across the globe and 80% in China alone.
Most experts believe mobile payments will become the primary method for payment and replace both cash and credit cards by the year 2020.
