The 2013 DDM Merchant Survey is a comprehensive report that focuses on online marketing trends and highlights how merchants have adapted to online marketing, which marketing channels they find effective, how much time and money they spend on social media, and how they plan on spending 2014 marketing budgets.

The survey was conducted between July and September 2013, with 13,846 US-based merchants participating in the poll which consisted of 43 questions. To view a the full list of survey questions, click here

The results indicate that local merchants are over-burdened with the latest online marketing tools, struggle to adapt to Mobile and are contacted on average over 5 times per week by companies pitching online marketing or social media products and services.

67% of merchants indicated they weren’t sure how to measure the effectiveness of their online marketing campaigns and only 17% stated that they were completely satisfied in their marketing efforts.

The survey also found some merchant categories show higher adaptation than others. For example, eating and drinking establishments report a higher adaptation of mobile payment solutions and indicate a higher satisfaction with digital coupons and daily deals than others.

Merchants also responded to questions about their overall satisfaction with their websites and how much they have spent historically on development and design.
